Falling Off The QT Wagon

February 9, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I had mentioned before that Quiet Time is a NECESSITY not an option for us, SAHMs in The Necessity of Quiet Time. Unfortunately it is always easier to give advice than to follow it!

I have to confess that in the midst of much busyness, the first thing to go was my own QT with the Lord! T here were always many more pressing things that I HAD to do & QT kept on getting pushed to a “later” time that of course, never came!

It didn’t help that I went off my B Complex supplements coz I thought that I had no more nausea after I hit 16weeks of this pregnancy. It was only after I went off it that I realised that I needed to take it to not only stave off my nausea but also to boost my energy level!

So my usual time slot of doing QT when the children rested/napped became my naptime!!! Even though I felt the gentle pushing by the Holy Spirit to read God’s Word and pray, I was either too tired, too busy or too distracted. It is really so easy to keep ignoring the prompting of the Holy Spirit till you become too de-sensitized to hear it anymore!

But I am glad to report that I have gotten back to the swing of QT! And cliché though it sounds, it really is helping me juggle the many balls in the air better! Are things all hunky dory? Of course not! But I am more grounded. My focus has been corrected yet again and the sense of despair due to feelings of being overwhelmed has ebbed.

Today, I read Psalm 141 and am reminded once again that we need to pray like King David did when overwhelmed and feeling attacked from all corners :

But my eyes are fixed on you,
O sovereign Lord;
In you I take refuge… Ps 141:8

As SAHMs it is so easy to get distracted by the number of things that NEED to be done but be careful that we do not become like Martha! We need to remember Jesus’ gentle chiding :

Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:38-42).

You may wish to read Having A Mary Heart in a Martha World which I found helpful when I was puzzling over how to balance our duties and the need to spend time with our Lord.

As we press on and get our jobs done let us not neglect the “better part”!

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World
By Joanna Weaver / Random House, Inc

The life of a woman today isn’t really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord’s feet…but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him…yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy.

Then comes Jesus, right into the midst of your busy Mary/Martha life—and he extends the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters of Bethany. Tenderly he invites you to choose “the better part”—a joyful life of “living-room” intimacy with him that flows naturally into “kitchen service” for him.

How can you make that choice? Now updated with a new 12 week companion Bible study, Weaver shows how all of us—Marys and Marthas alike—can draw closer to our Lord, deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.
