Building Up Moms

Why Use A Devotional

February 9, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As I approach the end of this pregnancy, my Quiet Times with the Lord has become more and more sporadic and insufficient. Without a structured “programme” or devotional, I am choosing more and more to nap, surf the Net, work on my website, etc…instead of spending time with the Lord!

I had written about the importance of Quiet Times before (The Necessity of Quiet Time and Falling Off the QT Wagon) so I will try not to repeat myself! But it is such an important topic!). I just want to share that without accountability, it is very easy to not spend time with the Lord, even though we know (in our heads) that we need the Lord!

But our role as wives, as moms, is hard! More so when we want to be godly wives and moms. And so since we can’t count on our innate wish to spend time with the Lord, we may need to fix it into our routine. But be careful that it isn’t one more thing to be ticked off in our To-Do List! Be careful too that we do not get legalistic about it – oh I must do my QT or else…..!!!

So I have decided that I will start on a new devotional book so that I will have a structure to help me as I progress in this pregnancy. Also, I know that with baby’s arrival, my time to read and mediate for periods longer than 15 min per time is going to disappear! Doing a devotional would mean that at least I am reading a portion of scripture daily. Otherwise, it will be way to easy for me to say that I have no time to read the Bible!

While I was wondering what I would use, I went surfing on the Net . Now I know that if I used the Internet for my QT, I would be tempted to surf for other stuff or check my emails! For those who are stronger than me, there are plenty of free devotionals out there!

One that I have used before is found at Back To The Bible. They have many devotionals by various authors like Elisabeth Elliot and Woodroll Kroll. Or choose by topics. Or check out www.CrossWalk.com. Otherwise, just google “devotionals” and choose one that you like! There are plenty out there and you have no more excuses to not do your devotions!

For me, I was reminded that I have a lovely copy of Oswald Chambers’ My Utmost for His Highest in hard cover! This is an updated edition edited by James Reimann. And already, the Lord has used it to speak to me when I read May 12th ’s devotion! Ah! It’s good to be back IN the presence of the Lord!

May He forgive me for seeking to do things on my own!!! And may this prompt you to press on to seek His face and presence in your own daily walk with Jesus.
