Trust God and Do The Next Thing

February 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

What do you do when you are feeling overwhelmed? I remember Oswald Chambers’ “Trust God and do the next thing” principle.

We all tend to over-worry. And that’s why this is addressed in the Sermon on the Mount.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink….Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?….But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:25 – 33

So what’s the solution? It is found in verse 33 – Seek first His kingdoom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.

I worry a lot. And to top it off, I have an overactive imagination that often has my dh rolling his eyes at me. But thanks be to God, I have made some progress here!

Everytime I want to worry about something, I give it to God. Big things, small things. I keep laying them all at the feet of Jesus. I pray “Here Lord, I refuse to worry about _____. I lay them at the feet of Your cross and just trust You.” And then I fix my eyes on Jesus, remembering to seek His kingdom and His righteousness. Sometimes though, I have to pray this many times in the course of just one hour!

Remember, “we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:15-16.

Don’t get overwhelmed, don’t get worried, don’t get afraid. Trust God and do the next thing!

What is the next thing? It could be as simple as getting off our butts to clean up the house instead of moaning that the house is so messy. Or putting a load of laundry into the washing machine instead of whining that we’ll never get caught up with it. If it is children’s behaviour that is getting us down, then we need to pray. And then discipline consistently. Just do what needs to be done. Don’t get paralysed by our fears and worries.

TRUST GOD, DO THE NEXT THING!
